Short answer: DHA states that you can reschedule or cancel up to five calendar days before the exam, fees are non-refundable, you should arrive 30 minutes early with your passport, and appointments depend on availability. A missed exam does not count as a failed attempt. Ask for leave before you book.
How do you fit a DHA exam around shift work?
Book around your rota, not the other way round. DHA’s manuals set a few rules that matter to a shift worker: how late you can change the date, what happens if you miss it and when to arrive. This guide lists them, with a short planning routine for night duty. Meddex is independent and is not connected to the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) or Prometric.

What does the five day rule mean for your rota?
Any change must be made at least five calendar days ahead. That is earlier than most rota changes get agreed. So the practical order is: get your leave approved, then book. If you book first and leave is refused, you have a short window to move the appointment before the money is lost. If you pass the window, cancelling costs you the fee, and DHA says the fee is not refunded.
Leave dates and rotas are set by your employer, and we know of nothing in DHA’s documents that requires an employer to give leave. Ask early.
What if you miss it because of a shift?
DHA says a cancelled or missed exam is not counted as a failed attempt, so it does not use up one of your three attempts. It also says there is no refund. In effect you lose money and time, not an attempt. We would still avoid it, since the next slot depends on availability, which DHA does not forecast. How should you plan around night duty?
Sleep research suggests memory and attention suffer after a poor night, which is why the advice below puts rest first. Our suggestions:
- Do not book an appointment straight after a run of nights. Leave at least one full sleep cycle of normal nights before.
- Move your sleep a few days ahead, not the night before. A late change the evening before often costs more than it gains.
- Plan your travel for the 30 minute early arrival, and add time for check-in, which DHA says involves identity checks.
- Eat a normal meal, and pack only what the test centre allows. See what to do the night before.
- If you work nights, keep a short revision slot at the same clock time as your exam for the last two weeks, so your focus peaks at the right hour.
How do you study while the date is fixed?
Count back from the date in blocks that match your rota, not calendar weeks. Our guides for night shifts, working nurses and working doctors show how to split time.
What should you check in the week of the booking?
A short list: leave approved in writing, the five day deadline for any change in your calendar, your passport valid and matching your registration, a route and a spare hour for travel, and a rota with no night duty on the two nights before. If any item fails, move the appointment while you still can.
